The PLASTIC UNIVERSE Theory

Evil Dead Plastic Universe

Premise: technically speaking, each Evil Dead movie has its self-contained continuity and could be seen as a “standalone” world/alternate universe. I developed a new theory to avoid the multiuniverse concept and make installments “canon” to each other, even if not in the conventional way you’d think.

The universe in the Evil Dead saga

The Evil Dead Universe is one and only, but its continuum is shaken by perturbations – much like the Butterfly Effect – that “revise” reality and rewrite history. These perturbations are generated by some obscure and complicated incantation conceived by a mysterious elite of interdimensional quasi-demons or hybrids (similar to the Dark Ones, but more powerful) interested in keeping the right balance between Good and Evil on Earth. I called this group The Raimanders.
This incantation or ritual acts as a “reset button”, and it is embedded into the Book of the Dead. The incantation’s power, even if evoked in the future, affects the whole timeline - including the ancient Sumerian era where the origins and the conception of the Necronomicon/Book of the Dead take place.
Each time a quantum manipulation – a Realityquake - happens, the pre-existing Worldline (specific version of the timeline) is altered and it morphs into a new Wordline with slightly or radically different outcomes.
Past, present and future of each Worldline are instantaneously shaped as part of a new, fixed timeline; a causal loop ruled by predestination paradox. The centerpieces of this phenomenon are Ash and the Book of the Dead.

When does the Realityquake happen?

The Raimanders created this complex ritual in the prime timeline (The Evil Dead). The book had been burned in the cabin (the ending of The Evil Dead) and Ashley was still possessed by the Kandarian Demon, aimlessly wandering in the woods as a Deadite. It was a stall, since the Kandarian Demon couldn’t dominate the world without the book anyway.
The Raimanders noticed that this simple 21 year old boy just managed to survive one night, naturally avoided the Kandarian Demon’s possession through Deadite bite/attack and succeeded into briefly defeating the Kandarian Demon. They picked him as new champion of the world, the Good Force. So they performed this ritual which connected Ash to the Book: beyond time, space and dimensions.
When the timeline is tweaked for the very first time, originating the Evil Dead II iteration, the incantation of the Raimanders (The Grey Incantantion) naturally appeared as “part” of the Book of the Dead – in a way similar to the one described by Ruby in Episode 10, in regards to the "El Jefe" page.

Ash

Ash is one and the same in each Worldline, so we’re dealing with the same person operating in this single universe, but his life changes in tune with each iteration of the timeline.
In Worldline Alpha (TED), he is a 21 year old student. In Worldline Beta (ED2), he seems to be wealthy - because he intends to purchase the Knowby Cabin - so maybe he is a renowned engineer. In Worldline Gamma (1/2), he works in a S-Mart shop, so something went wrong in his life along the way and he must have dropped out of university.
Fact is, he’s always the same Ashley J. Williams – only at different stages of his life and personal development, in accordance with the rearranging of reality which occurs.

The Kandarian Demon and the Book of the Dead

The Kandarian Demon is one and the same in each Worldline - exactly as Ash - but different incantations or different Necronomicon versions can make it more or less powerful and determinate different abilities in its range of faculties.

The Book of the Dead is one and the same, but its cover and overall appearance may vary as well as its official denomination. In later Worldlines, the Book becomes seemingly indestructible, despite the fact there are magical means to harm or even obliterate it.

Worldline Alpha (The Evil Dead)

Origins

The Book of Dead is called Naturan Demanto. The volume is sentient and looks more rough and torn. The Dark Ones conceived it during the times of the ancient Sumeria.
No Hero from the Sky or Promised One in the Middle Ages.
After many millennia, the Book of the Dead was stored and hidden in the Kandar Castle for unknown reasons.
A younger Raymond Knowby, along with some colleagues, discovered it.
In the sixties, he rented a cabin in Morristown, Tennessee, and translated some important passages from the Book of the Dead.

1979: The Evil Dead

Ashley J. Williams, Cheryl Williams, Linda, Scott and Shelly rent the cabin for a weekend.
The Evil Dead is unleashed.
Ash is possessed at the very end of his battle. The Book of the Dead is also lost forever (burned), and the Kandarian Demon cannot use it anymore in order to conquer the world of the living.

Altering the timeline: after having retrieved the remnants of the Book of the Dead and locating the Deadite Ash in the Tennessee woods, a select elite of Raimanders perform the ritual and establish the Realityquakes system.

Worldline Beta (Evil Dead II)

Origins

The Book of the Dead is called Necronomicon Ex Mortes a.k.a. Naturum Demontum. It looks more sophisticated but it’s not sentient like its previous counterpart. The Dark Ones wrote it at the dawn of time, when seas turned into blood.
In 1300 AC, a mysterious man appeared in the Kandar region and killed a bat-winged Deadite. He soon became known as "The Hero from the Sky" and fought the Kandarian Demon until the very last days of his troubled and tragic life. He died of natural causes in 1341 AC.
In 1987, an older Raymond Knowby – along with Henrietta Knowby, Annie Knowby and Edward Gatley – discovered the Necronomicon and the Kandarian Dagger among the ruins of the Kandar Castle.
Knowby went to a cabin located in Wadesboro (North-Carolina) which he purchased years before, in order to study the Necronomicon and its primeval secrets.

1987: Evil Dead II

Ashley J. Williams and a “new” Linda (presumably a different girl from the prime version of the timeline) go on vacation. Ash wants to purchase the Knowby Cabin.
The Evil Dead is unleashed.
After a long battle with the Kandarian Demon, Ash travels back in time and materializes in 1300 AC, at the Kandar region. He will eventually become the Hero from the Sky, fulfilling the causal loop of this specific iteration.

Altering the timeline: after the Nexus spontaneously closes up, the Book of the Dead is still lying somewhere in the Knowby Cabin. Many decades later, a rogue Raimander coming from the Outside Dimension will be able to find the incantation in there and recite it, thus triggering the second Realityquake.

Worldline Gamma 1 (Army of Darkness – Director’s Cut)

Origins

The Book of the Dead is called Necronomicon Ex Mortis.
In 1392 AC, a mysterious man appeared in a region plagued by the Evil Dead. He was known as  "The Promised One". He fought the Army of Darkness and propelled two opposing kingdoms to finally fuse into a new one.
In 1992, an older Raymond Knowby discovered the Necronomicon Ex Mortis hidden in the very same castle where The Promised One fought his war.
Knowby went to an unspecified cabin set in an unspecified region, in order to study the Necronomicon and its primeval secrets.

1992: Army of Darkness

Ashley J. Williams and a “third” Linda go on vacation.
The Evil Dead is unleashed.
Ash uses the notes left by Knowby, and recites a passage, opening the Nexus. So he travels back in time and materializes in 1392 AC.
He is The Promised One.
After the final battle, he’s given a magical serum to come back to his original time.
He awakes from his mystical sleep in 2092 AC, in a post-apocalyptic England.

Altering the timeline: over time, Ash will adapt to the ravaged London, despite having been driven insane by the trauma.
A rogue Raimander, maybe after decades or even one century since the holocaust (2192?), will find the Book of the Dead (which is indestructible) and recite the Grey Incantation. The third Realityquake happens.

Worldline Gamma 2 (Army of Darkness – Theatrical Cut)

In 1992, an older Raymond Knowby discovered the Necronomicon Ex Mortis in the very same castle where The Promised One fought his war.
Knowby went to an unspecified cabin set in an unspecified region, in order to study the Necronomicon and its primeval secrets.

1992: Army of Darkness

Ashley J. Williams and a “third” Linda go on vacation.
Ash uses the notes left by Knowby, and recites a passage, opening the Nexus. So he travels back in time and materializes in 1392 AC.
He is The Promised One.
After the final battle, he’s given a magical serum to come back to his original time.
He awakes from his mystical sleep in 1992. Then he faces a new Deadite at the S-Mart shop in Grand Rapids. A new Evil Dead plague arises…

Altering the timeline: the Book of the Dead has been left in the cabin, so it can be retrieved by Ash or someone else.

Worldline Delta (Evil Dead)

Origins

The Book of Dead is called Naturan Demanto.
No Hero from the Sky or Promised One in the Middle Ages.
The Book of the Dead was stored and hidden in the Kandar Castle for unknown reasons.
Raymond Knowby, along with some colleagues, discovered it.
After many unfortunate coincidences, the book ended in Tennessee, more specifically at the Allen Cabin.

2013: Evil Dead

Mia Allen, her brother David and their friends face the Evil Dead.
Mia is the only survivor.
In this continuity, by the time Evil Dead plays out, Ash has not been involved in any event related to the Book of the Dead (yet).

Altering the timeline: the Book of the Dead is left in the remnants of the Allen Cabin, so it can be retrieved. Surely Ash will be sooner or later involved in Mia’s story.
In the future, a rogue Raimander will recite the Grey Incantation again, breaking the cycle again.

Worldline Sigma (Ash vs. Evil Dead)

The notion of multiple iterations of the timeline is hideously suggested in the series by two instances: Kelly’s words in Episode 3 (“The Ash of any world”) and the hallucinations in Episode 4 (Ash facing/fighting many alternate Ashes and Lindas).

TED and ED2 occurred in sequence - forming a two-day struggle - and the events of the Middle Ages happened in different way from AoD.

1985: The Evil Dead (altered version) + Evil Dead II (altered version) + Army of Darkness (altered version).
2015: the first season of AvED.
2016: the second season of AvED.

  1. Since they go back in time in the latest episode, couldn't that explain the inconsistencies between the movies? It could have been done many times before, causing the same thing to happen over and over, and Ash fudging something up which alters the timeline slightly each time?
